Securing the Internet of Things (IoT)

The internet of things, known as “IoT” refers to a set of interrelated computing devices or objects that transfer data over the network without requiring human to human or human to computer interaction. Besides, it can also mean an object or device that sends and receives data automatically through the internet. This rapidly expanding technology includes sensors and other devices that interact with people and share information without any human intervention.

Why should you care about IoT?

Wearable devices, lighting, cars, appliances and home security devices all contain sensing devices that can talk to each other and trigger additional actions. For instances, in smart homes, you can you bulbs and lighting systems turn on by themselves even without you being there. Thus, this technology offers different levels of convenience to human life, however, it requires that the security of this technology be guarded since the security of the devices are always guaranteed in this digital era where hackers try anything and everything.  What are the risks associated with this technology?

The Risks Associated with IoT

Although most of the resilience and security risks are not new, the interconnection of the device in IoT increases the consequences of both known and unknown risks. Due to the nature of the interconnection between devices, attackers take advantage of this scale and infect large segments at one go. Hence, allowing them to access data on those devices or attack the devices with malicious intent.

How to improve the security of Internet-Enabled devices

Without any doubt, IoT makes our lives easier. Besides, it has many benefits, however, people can only reap these benefits if the Internet-Enabled devices are trusted and secured. Below are some of the ways you should consider to make your IOT more secure.

Evaluate the device security settings: Most devices offer a number of features that one can tailor to meet their requirements and needs.  In fact, enabling some features on the gadgets increases the convenience or functionality may leave you more vulnerable to being attacked by hackers. When connecting your devices, always ensure the settings, particularly security settings by ensuring the relevant options meet your required needs without making you more vulnerable.  Whenever you install a new patch or update on your device, always you reevaluate the security settings to make sure they are appropriate.

Up to date software: Running an old software on your device can leave the whole system vulnerable to attacks. Mostly, manufacturers release patches and updates to their software. The patches are aimed at fixing some of the flaws within the system. Patches refer to software updates that fix a particular problem or vulnerability within your device software. Always ensure you apply relevant patches to your system as soon as possible.

Consider carefully: Once your device is connected to the internet, it is also connected to other millions of devices.  This could allow attackers to gain access to your device. The first thing to determine is how long you would want your device to remain connected to the internet.

Using strong Passwords: Passwords are the most common form of authentication between you and your personal information. Hence, having a combination of different characters of not less than 8 and changing the password more often can help keep attackers at bay. Never use default passwords on your device since they can easily be found online. Always choose strong passwords to help you secure your device.

Overall, there are many considerations to keep you informed of regarding Internet of Things (IoT) devices.  Most of these are very dependent on the tech manufacturer but a bit of common sense can prevent your camera from ending up on a random website somewhere.
